// carrotmob
In August 2009, Zana started the grass-roots environmental sustainability project, Carrotmob Sydney. This was the first Carrotmob in the Southern hemisphere, inspired by similar projects in cities across the US and Europe.
More of a buycott than a boycott, ‘Carrotmobing’ is a method of activism that uses consumer buying power as a way of encouraging businesses to green up. It involves consumers pledging to shop at a store which, in turn, has pledged to make environmentally positive changes in their business.
The first Carrotmob event took place at the Surry Hills MFC Supermarket, on October 24th 2009, coinciding with 350.org’s International Day of Climate Action. Hundreds of people mobbed the store on the day, buying groceries which they would have bought otherwise elsewhere, and significantly boosting the store’s earnings. In return the small independent supermarket put 20% of the day’s earnings towards making energy efficient and environmentally responsible changes to their business.
